National Indigenous Peoples Day — June 21

Jun 3, 2026

June 21 offers a moment to pause, reflect, and recognize the diverse cultures, traditions, and ways of knowing and being of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across what is now known as Canada. The date coincides with the summer solstice, a time of deep significance for many Indigenous Nations, grounded in connection to land, seasonal cycles and stewardship.

This day offers an opportunity not only to celebrate, but also to reflect on the histories and systems that continue to shape experiences today, and to consider how we show up in our work and relationships. In healthcare, this includes recognizing that Indigenous-specific cultural safety is rooted in respect, trust, relationships, and an openness to Indigenous ways of knowing and being.

In Practice

There are many ways to engage in a good way, such as taking time to learn about the Nations on whose territories you live and work, creating space within your team to reflect, or connecting with community through local events and gatherings.

Locally, the annual National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration at Royal Roads University offers an opportunity to come together in a good way, to learn, unlearn, reflect, and celebrate. Our friends at the Victoria Native Friendship Centre will also be hosting celebration and creating space for good connection and community.

For those looking for another pathway to engage, we’re sharing The Good Canadian, an investigative documentary co-directed by Leena Minifie (Gitxaala Nation) and David Paperny. It brings forward real stories of individuals and families and includes perspectives from those working within these systems.
