September 30th: National Truth and Reconciliation Day

Sep 4, 2025

September 30th National Truth and Reconciliation Day can be a day of learning and commitment.

It is now a national day to commemorate the history and legacy of the Residential School system based on one of the 94 Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report. It is important to honour the children who did not return home and to uphold the Survivors, families and communities.

September 30th also marks Orange Shirt Day based on the experience of Phyllis (Jack) Webstad who had her clothing taken away when entering Residential School, even her special orange shirt.  Wearing an orange shirt is a way to support the stories and share the message that “Every Child Matters.”

Read Phyllis Webstad’s story here.

We invite you to seek out ways to deepen your knowledge and understanding.

If you want to attend or volunteer at an event in honour of National Truth and Reconciliation Day, Songhees First Nations hosts their Pow Wow on September 30th . Learn more here.
