Alexis Moore, Indigenous Program Lead, had the opportunity to spend National Indigenous Peoples Day at the Victoria Native Friendship Centre, where community members, families, and visitors gathered to celebrate Indigenous culture and take part in the many teachings, stories and experiences offered throughout the day.
Alexis had this to say about the event:
“For the first time in many years, the Friendship Centre hosted the celebration. The day opened with the Traditional Lək̓ʷəŋən Singers and Dancers and featured local artisans, cultural teachings, family activities, an expanded Community Soup Lunch, Tipi Teachings and a story walk hosted in partnership with the Greater Victoria Public Library and the Bruce Parisian Library.
What stood out most to me was how every room offered something different, creating opportunities to connect, reflect and celebrate Indigenous cultures in ways both big and small.
One of my favorite spaces is the Bruce Parisian Library. Housed within the Friendship Centre, it is a fully Indigenous library where every book is intentionally selected to elevate Indigenous authors, illustrators, educators, storytellers, and knowledge keepers. It is a welcoming space that invites curiosity, reflection, and connection through Indigenous stories and knowledge.
As we move beyond National Indigenous Peoples Day, the library serves as a reminder that there are many ways to stay connected to Indigenous voices, stories, and perspectives. In that spirit, click on the photo to see the Bruce Parisian Library‘s curated reading list featuring Indigenous books on health, wellness and wellbeing.
Happy reading!”
